This videos shows you how you can measure large amounts of current into Arduino using a current shunt. Basically, the shunt voltage drop will be too small to read directly into Arduino, so you need to amplify it to get descent resolution. I use AD8215 current sensing amplifier.

The AD8215 is an excellent IC, and is remarkably accurate, but it does have an offset of 33mv. This means that the first 7 counts are void. Basically, the IC can't measure the first 500ma. Not a problem for this setup!
